About

Hospitals are often judged by outcomes. Fewer talk about the systems behind them. Dr. Bedri Yusuf has spent a career working on both. As a practicing physician and senior healthcare executive, he has focused on how care is delivered, how doctors are supported, and how complex organizations can work better for patients and staff alike.

Dr. Yusuf was born and raised in Ethiopia as the tenth of sixteen children. Growing up in a large household shaped how he sees teamwork and responsibility.

His early interest in medicine came from personal experience. His father struggled with hypertension, and Yusuf saw many patients with leprosy in his community. These experiences led him to pursue medicine through a full scholarship at Addis Ababa University.

Dr. Yusuf’s medical education spans three continents. After medical school in Ethiopia, he completed a dermatology residency at the University of Leipzig in Germany.

Political changes in Ethiopia eventually brought him to the United States. He completed an internal medicine residency at Atlanta Medical Center, where he laid the foundation for hospital medicine and academic teaching.

While practicing medicine, Dr. Yusuf became increasingly interested in how hospitals function as systems. At Gwinnett Health System, he moved into leadership roles, including System Medical Director for Hospital Medicine, Vice President of the Medical Staff, and later Chief Physician Executive.

In 2019, Dr. Yusuf joined Northeast Georgia Health System as Chief Physician Executive for Northeast Georgia Physicians Group. Over six years, the medical group grew by more than 85 percent. Provider turnover dropped by over 50 percent.

He later served as interim Chief Medical Officer during the COVID-19 pandemic, guiding teams through one of the most challenging periods in modern healthcare.

Today, Dr. Bedri Yusuf continues to practice internal medicine while looking ahead to the next chapter of his career. His work reflects a consistent theme: improving healthcare by aligning systems, data, and people.
